I made this Guitar Hero cake for my brother's birthday. Pretty cool, huh?
I decided to make the fondant a little different this time. Instead of mixing a lot of the powdered sugar and marshmallow in a bowl or in a mixer, I decided to try it a way I saw on a video online. I put a little over half the powdered sugar on the greased table, then put the marshmallow mixture from the microwave on top of that, then added the rest of the powdered sugar. This worked so much better for me!! I greased up the ball of fondant and put it in the fridge overnight.
I mixed these the night before I made the cake as well. They were for the fret keys. I used a gel coloring for the red and liquid for the rest. The liquid was awful to work with in this situation.
I traced our Guitar Hero guitar on parchment paper, cut that out, put it on the cake and carved from there. That was a big help.
After carving and filling. The carving was easier than I thought but getting the frosting in was a pain. Next time I'll have to frost it then carve it.
I was so nervous to put it on and make it so there were no puckers but I actually did a pretty good job. I struggled with it on my last cake but saw online to lift from the bottom as you are molding it to the sides and that helped SO much! Thank goodness for the internet. :)
To make the fondant black I added coco to the fondant and then added black food coloring. I messed up on my first batch and kept trying to fix it. After trying to make it work for a while I did what I should have done in he first place and started over. That really set me back which was a pain, but now I know what to look for.
This was before I put the detales on the white part of the fondant. Quite a work area, huh? Messy, messy, messy...
Here's after the details were put on. I was really nervous to do it and didn't want to mess the cake up but after encouragement from my wonderful hubby I went for it and I'm glad I did. I thought it really made the cake.
Here is a close up on those details. The whammy bar looks unfinished because that is where one of the candles would go.
Yum!! It was super tasty!
DO
ALWAYS check to make sure fondant isn't sticking while rolling it out!!
Frost in between before carving the cake
Lift from the bottom while smoothing fondant onto the side of the cake
Spray the cake with a little water after "dirty icing" and before putting on fondant
Leave fondant in fridge over night if possible. MUCH easier to work with the next day.
DON'T
Use liquid food coloring if possible
Smooth too fast. Fondant can rip easily.
Use too much coco. Eeeew!
Doubt yourself! You can do it!! Thanks for your encouragement honey!!
